What is involved in building a rooftop or high-rise pool?
Four constraints dominate. Structural: transfer-slab loading and lateral wind shear at height, which is why the design starts with structural modelling rather than a shape. Acoustic: plant-room vibration must be isolated from the tenancy below, usually with neoprene and epoxy isolation detailing. Waterproofing: a failure over occupied floors is catastrophic, so membranes are fully bonded and commercial-rated rather than domestic. Logistics: every cubic metre of concrete and every plant item is a crane movement inside someone else's programme. We have delivered rooftop vessels on towers above 30 storeys.

How is filtration sized for a commercial pool?
By bather load and statutory turnover, not by vessel volume alone. We design turnovers as short as 30 minutes for high-load facilities such as learn-to-swim and splash play, using sand or glass media, ultra-fine filtration, and UV or ozone sanitisation as the duty requires. Undersized plant rooms and residential-grade pumps are one of the most common causes of forced operational closure in commercial facilities, so the plant room is sized for the busiest realistic day rather than the average.

How do you construct the pool shell?
A monolithic shotcrete shell, poured as a single continuous operation to eliminate cold joints and substrate weakness — the industry best practice at commercial scale. That is followed by a fully bonded commercial-grade waterproofing membrane, then commercial ceramics or epoxy grouts set to tolerance. On competition vessels the tile setting is surveyed with laser theodolite during the shoot and the finish, because dimensional accuracy has to survive tiling rather than merely exist in the concrete.

What does it take to build a 50m competition pool?
Extreme dimensional accuracy above everything else. A competition 50m vessel must hold 50.020m at the waterline to a tolerance measured in millimetres, sustained after tiling and through seasonal thermal movement, which is precision well beyond ordinary construction tolerance. It also needs anti-turbulence wet-deck overflow so outside lanes are not disadvantaged, mounting provision for movable bulkheads if the pool is to be split into short-course, floor-inlet hydraulics for uniform temperature, and touch-pad integration. We have delivered a municipal 50m eight-lane vessel that audited at 50.017m.

Can you build a clinical hydrotherapy pool?
Yes. Hydrotherapy vessels are one of our specialisms and carry three constraints simultaneously: DDA-compliant access, clinical temperature tolerance held tightly around 34°C, and health-department audit standards. We have delivered vessels holding ±0.2°C across a full 12-month defects liability period, using an independent titanium heat-exchanger loop rather than sharing thermal duty with a main pool. Allied health providers, rehabilitation facilities and aged-care operators are a regular client segment.

What is different about building a swim school pool?
Uptime and water quality under sustained load. A learn-to-swim facility runs continuous classes at high bather density with young children, so the plant room is the business: if it drops, revenue stops that day. We build heavy-duty hydraulic setups with short turnovers, tight thermal control at teaching temperature, and finishes that survive high-volume use. Warehouse retrofits for franchise expansion are a common brief and we cover the structural and compliance implications in a dedicated blog article.

Do you repair or remediate an existing commercial pool?
Yes. Targeted engineering services — structural waterproofing diagnostics and application, water-treatment and plant-room upgrades, and structural assessment and remediation — are available for legacy commercial assets that need intervention rather than full reconstruction. We are regularly engaged by operators, insurers and new owners who have inherited a failing vessel, and we will tell you honestly whether remediation or replacement is the better economic answer.
